A STEM Alliance, STE(A)M IT & Scientix webinar was hosted on Thursday, 25 November 2021 at 17:00 CET. The topic of the event was how technology and STEM can improve the education of students with disabilities. During the event, our guest speakers talked about their solutions to give autonomy and possibilities to people with disabilities. Besides, they gave some recommendations, general rules, and useful tips, for designing accessible online courses through Moodle platform.

José Rubinger - Key2Enable: José Rubinger is a mission-driven serial entrepreneur graduated in Electronics and Business administration, creating sustainable businesses that benefit social impact, education, and health sectors for the past 20 years in Brazil. Result-oriented, he enjoys building strategic relationships with both internal and external stakeholders with a track record of business development and strategic partnerships activation between the public and private sectors. Key2enable developed a complete set of Assistive Technology composed by hardware and software that is an ALL-IN-ONE solution for students with disabilities, with which ANY other accessories in the market can be connected, enabling them to communicate, learn, work, play, engage, deliver content, local or on-line, curriculum-based or supplementary, to their homes, schools, clinics, and rehabilitation centers. In this session, we would love to explore the possibilities of how we can integrate the use of assistive technology inside classrooms and create a fun and interactive environment that can stimulate their level of engagement and we can witness their true potential.
Stella Magid She is a head teacher at Tzamarot Ayalon Inclusive secondary school in Tel-Aviv. Besides, she is a Scientix Ambassador for Israel, and a certified member of the STE(A)MIT – STEM Alliance Career Adviser Network. She has collaborated in the Key2Enable project by participating as a pilot teacher. She has three academic degrees from Technion-Israel Institute of Science and Technology: B.sc degree in Biology, B.ed degree in Science & Technology education and M.sc degree in Education in Science and Technology with an emphasis on Genetics and ICT web-based teaching & learning processes. The Key2enable solution in general and Expressia in particular help teachers integrate students with special needs into an Inclusive class where they could study together with regular kids. Additionally, it helps teachers enrich their lessons with great possibilities that the software and hardware features of the solution could provide them. On the one hand the solution is easy to use and on the other hand it increases student's involvement, so classes with the solutions are both interesting for the teacher and for the students. During my talk I will expose the audience to examples from my school with an emphasis on the different skills such as: social skills and the "asking question" skill.
Nikolaos Nerantzis - Having Fun with Science Physicist in Inclusion Classes , 2nd Vice-Principle, 1st Junior High School of Thermi (Greece). He is a Scientix Ambassador for Greece. Since 2006 he has been working as a Physicist in special education at secondary schools. Since 2006, he has supported and promoted scientific education to students, while inspiring and engaging many other colleagues to explore innovative ways of teaching and to promote science education, in national, European and international context. He was a PL for a IAU-OAD funded project (2017) and a Mozilla Science Grant (2018). Having Fun with Science: 11 high school students (5 girls, 6 boys) with and without disabilities or special educational needs are ‘Having Fun with Science' during 3 workshops on Electricity, Astronomy and Light. The project was a pilot implementation of non-formal education in the context of ERASMUS+ ‘Standard Protocol Procedure' (2016) with the following objectives A) to bring students closer to terms of science in a playful and practical way B) to connect the knowledge with everyday life C) to bring unknown people together and create a group dynamic from scratch and D) to give equal chances to people with and without disability to participate in a project.
Dimitrios Tsiastoudis – OpenHub OpenHub is a nonprofit organization located in the Brunch of National Foundation for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Thessaloniki. Openhub as partner organization of 2021 STEM DISCOVERY COMPAIGN run online, after-school, STEM courses during pandemic aiming to cultivate technological literacy, for the deaf, hard of hearing, and other students with sensory disabilities. According to this experience, I will provide some recommendations, general rules, and useful tips, for designing accessible online courses through Moodle platform. Dimitrios Tsiastoudis is a Scientix Ambassador and a PhD candidate in the didactics of physics in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and part of ST3dM Educational research group as also a high school Physics teacher for over 18 years. For the last 10 years, he has been teaching in Special school for the Deaf and Hard of hearing in Thessaloniki and his involvement as a founder of Openhub starts in 2015. He has designed and implemented for 5 years teacher training courses in educational robotics in eTwinning seminars and also 3dprinting teacher training courses in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
