CoP 1 - Evaluation of STEM teaching

During this online discussion, experts will discuss the latest studies on the evaluation of STEM teaching, existing systems of teacher appraisal and feedback and the fact that pyramidal structure of most science disciplines makes it essential to ensure quality training in initial education. Teachers taking part will have the opportunity to discuss and have insight from experts on the different ways to evaluate STEM teaching practices. The Community of Practice will also tackle the importance of training for teachers through Initial Teacher Education and Continuing Professional Development.

Experts

Elif Adibelli Sahin received her Ph.D. degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Science Education and a cognate in Educational Psychology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in the United States in 2015. She holds a M.S. degree in Elementary Science and Mathematics Education from the Middle East Technical University in Turkey. She taught elementary science methods course for undergraduates and master's students and engineering design for 3th through 5th grade students in Saturday Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her research interests include science education, teacher professional development, teachers' domain-specific and general epistemological beliefs, teachers' conceptions of nature of science, teacher beliefs, STEM education and environmental education. She is currently working at the TED University as a fellow of Co-Funded Brain Circulation Scheme (Co-Circulation), funded by the Scientific & Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and the EC-FP7 Marie Curie Actions-People-COFUND. Within the scope of the fellowship, she will conduct research on the relationships between teacher training, classroom practice, and student learning outcomes.

Marina Jiménez Iglesias works as a Project Administrator for Scientix, under the European Schoolnet umbrella. She is responsible for the organization of the Scientix Projects Networking events and the coordination of the Scientix STEM representatives working group. She is an active collaborator in the Scientix Observatory and in the development of further Scientix publications. Additionally, she has carried out different training activities on the topic of "Gender and STEM" within the Scientix framework. Marina has previous experience in development of European projects in different non-profit organizations. She holds a B.Sc. in Political Sciences and Administration from Universitat Pompeu Fabra and a M.A. in International Relations from the University of Bath.

Dr. Gunel attended to the vocational and technical high school. Afterwards, he took his BS degree in physics education and he worked as a science teacher at public school in Istanbul. While he was a teacher, he received Turkish Ministry of Education Scholarship to attend graduate school in US. In 2003 he received his MS degree with major in science education and minor in statistics from Iowa State University. His PhD degree was also pursued from the same institution again with major in science education and minor in statistics in 2006. His doctoral dissertation and research carrier was awarded with outstanding doctoral research and research excellence awards by Iowa State University. Upon completion of his graduate work in US, Dr. Gunel worked at Ataturk and Ahi Evran Universities in Turkey as a program coordinator, department chair, and faculty board member. He was appointed as an assistant professor in 2007 and associate professor in 2008. He has been working as a Primary Education department chair at TED University since 2011.

Dr. Gunel's research interest areas include argumentation based science inquiry, improving critical thinking skills, professional development for teachers, non-traditional writing in science, improving students' understanding of science with multi modal representations. He took roles as a research assistant, coordinator, consultant, and principal investigator in several national and international projects that founded by Turkish Ministry of Education, The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, National Science Foundation, The Institute of Education Sciences, Arthur Vining Davis Foundation, European SchoolNet and European Commission (FP7). Currently, aside from being PI of ongoing national and international projects, Dr. Gunel serves as an reviewer, external evaluator and editorial board member for national and international journals as well as funding agencies.

Communities of Practice

The STEM Alliance Communities of Practice (CoP) entail a moderated online forum, leaded by a designated expert, where STEM teachers will be able to discuss on science and technology subjects.

In this space you will find a basic presentation on the topic, paired with a series of useful resources as topic guidelines. Participants will find an array of open questions to inquire and discuss about.

The objective of the CoP is to let the participants engage and discuss with each other on those questions they are more interested in, to end up formulating a series of final ideas or conclusions.
