Gender and innovation in STE(A)M education

Arts-based science education can contribute to address gender bias and stereotypes in educational and collaborative settings argues a new Scientix observatory paper on gender and innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics STE(A)M education.

However, there are still many barriers for successfully integrating arts in STEM education, mostly due to institutional constraints. In order to overcome some of those barriers, it is recommended to increase training opportunities for educators and communication between stakeholders in STEM areas.

The constraints in these environments can be explicit or implicit and, while some of them might appear to be beyond educators' immediate control, not all will. For this reason, in situations where control is possible, STEM educators should understand the existence of many of those limits, and try to remedy them, with the ultimate goal of promoting gender equality. In order to counterbalance, these constraints and correct possible unequal situations, teaching strategies implemented in the classroom will need to be updated, in order to support girls' and boys' equal opportunities.

This paper is the outcome of the 12th Scientix Projects Networking Event, which was organised by Scientix in collaboration with the PERFORM and GEDII projects, funded by the Horizon 2020 framework of the European Union for research and innovation.
