Skype in the Classroom is a learning experience using the standard free version of Skype. This is a classroom practice supported by Microsoft Education.
By downloading Skype, creating an account and logging in, teachers can virtually take their classroom all across the world. Skills such as empathy, collaboration, communication and real-world problem-solving are all part of what students can develop through using this platform.
Skype in the Classroom can be used for Virtual Field Trips, Skype Collaborations, Guest Speakers, Skype Lessons and Mystery Skype. For instance, Skype Collaborations offers a platform to interact and exchange between schools, Virtual Field Trips are pre-recorded or interactive virtual visits to place across the world and Mystery Skype is a guessing game about geography, culture and more.
A calendar on the website helps navigate between upcoming events that might be relevant to a specific teacher and subject. In addition, there are many Skype lesson recordings and a collection of resources on various topics (e.g. space science, ecology and conservation, computer science, engineering, marine science) already uploaded on the site.
Teachers can also translate the information of the lessons to more than 60 languages by clicking on Translate (upper black panel between messages and sign-in). A training to learn using Skype in the Classroom, is accessible along with guidelines, lesson plans and a Skype translator service.
In every activity/lesson there is:
- a brief description
- an indication of age group
- a category assigned
- a language in which this lesson is provided
- some background information related to the topic
- a button to request the lesson
- a field to leave a feedback on this activity
- various supporting ready-to-use teaching material (presentations, worksheets, recommended videos and glossary).
Teachers can request sessions with guest speakers via their profiles if they think their background and experiences will work for the subjects they are teaching. For this purpose, a teacher has to be registered in the portal. This service is free of charge.
