Webinars outline - Thursday 27th April & Friday 28th April

The STEM Alliance, in cooperation with its partnes, is organising two webinars on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th of April.

The purpose of the ‘Amgen Scholars & transition from school-to-work' webinars is to provide primary and secondary (STEM) school teachers with insights into a top STEM school-to-work program, the Amgen Scholars program, and the possible STEM career pathways this can lead to.

During this session, you will learn what the Amgen Scholars program is and gain insights into its objectives. During the second part of the session, you will have the chance to hear the stories of two alumni of this program who will share their journey and evolution as top STEM professionals, key influences and advice for teachers who are currently preparing their students for STEM careers.

The webinar is organized by STEM Alliance and European Schoolnet and is featured as part of the Opening Minds to STEM Careers MOOC which is meant to train and empower primary and secondary (STEM) school teachers to guide and inspire their students towards STEM careers. 

AVALAIBLE DATES AND SPEAKERS

In order to allow as many as possible to participate to the webinars, there are going to be two dates:

Session 1

Speaker: Lela Okromelidze, Fifth Year Student at the Tbilisi State Medical University, 2015 Amgen Scholar. Lela Okromelidze grew up in the Eurasian country of Georgia, which after years of fighting following the fall of the Soviet Union, didn't always provide the educational opportunities of many other countries. Having to occasionally attend school without heat or electricity, Lela, with the help of her mother, defied the odds and is now a fifth year medical student at Tbilisi State Medical University. Upon graduation, it is her goal to become resident physician at a leading medical institution in the U.S. where she would one day like to follow in the footsteps of her mother by becoming a radiologist while also pursuing clinical research.

Session 2 

Speaker: Marta Andres Terre, Ph.D. Candidate, Immunology at Stanford, 2010 Amgen Scholar. Originally from Spain, Marta Andres Terre's journey in science has taken her to the U.K., Switzerland, Sweden and now the U.S. As a current Ph.D. student in Immunology at Stanford, she is working to uncover cures for bacterial diseases like typhoid fever and the flu by discovering how the body can block them. Outside the lab, she is very active in helping future scientists on campus at Stanford. She began a group called the Stanford Biotechnology Group, which brings in speakers to educate students on many different fields of science. She also tutors young scientists on how to communicate science in a clear way in a variety of situations to help bridge the communications gap between the scientific community and general population.

Made possible through a 12-year, $50 million commitment from the Amgen Foundation, Amgen Scholars allows undergraduates from across the globe to participate in cutting-edge research opportunities at world-class institutions. 17 leading institutions across the U.S., Europe and Japan currently host the summer program.

Undergraduate participants benefit from undertaking a research project under top faculty, being part of a cohort-based experience of seminars and networking events, and taking part in a symposium in their respective region (U.S., Europe or Japan) where they meet their peers, learn about biotechnology, and hear from leading scientists.

The Opening Minds to STEM Careers MOOC

This course is meant to train and empower primary and secondary (STEM) school teachers in successfully introducing and attracting young people to STEM careers from an early age, as well as to learn about private and public initiatives on STEM education.

The course discusses the following topics: STEM careers in schools and in the job market, career induction activities, gender stereotypes in STEM education, how to balance the roles of teachers, mentors and parents, STEM school-to-work programs and how to organize career orientation events on STEM education.

The course has started on 3^rd April 2017 and registrations are still open. Certification is still possible until 4^th June 2017. Register HERE!
